HB Bhandari Prabhat Principal New Don Bosco Academy,Kathmandu
(This article is in the process of English translation. You're not reading the final version.
Q. Would you please say something about the establishment of New Don Bosco Academy?
The founder of this academy was Shanta Lama. She established this academy in 1997.Ther is no monetary profit from school. We should not expect it as well. If we produce efficient main power we earn name that is profit to us. That profit is not only our profit rather it is the profit of entire nation. We should not have weak mental thinking of earning profit from education sector. Now, we are running up to the grade ten. Most of students are from middle class family. We have good hostel facility. The transportation facility will be started from this year. We have established library and science lab this year.
Q. How is the fee structure at your school? How do you collect student's tution fee?
The maximum tution fee per student per month is Rs 800 to 450. We determine by their economic status. We do not charge tution fee for 5-6 months in Nursery. In my concept, we should not give pressure to pay the fee to the guardian. Students will be attacted to this school figuring out our academic strength and prospectus. The negative concept develops if any school demands high sum of money. To get rid from this tendency every parents has to be conscious. We never say“we do not permit your child to come to school if you do not pay fee.”
Q. The school name sounds foreigner invested school. What do you say?
Indeed, it sounds. But there is no investment of foreigner.
Q. How do you differntiate Boarding School with Government School?
The government has fully invested on different educational institutions of country. Still, there is demarcation line between the government school and boarding school. The students from boarding school appears in SLC after reading 13 years whereas student faces same exam just finishing ten year’s class . Behold! How the student from government can compete with the student passed out from boarding school. There are efficient teachers in Government school. However, very few teachers do have willingness to do hard labor in teaching. Such teachers just do stay outside sunbathing. Further, more they don’t upgrade their knowledge according to the time and change in syllabus. Therefore there is no quality education according to the objective and age group and change in course book and syllabus. It is not my protest but has presented bitter truth. When students go for higher studies most of them are weak in English. In Government school, the government invests where as parents invest in private school. But the quality education of government school is not satisfactory. It is not fair. The government bodies also do not monitor them properly. The teaching profession should not be looked as the profession to pass time and do until better opportunity. Therefore the quality education has not been increased.
Q. Could you please explain about your school scholarship policy?
We have established NDBA Scholarship programme. The talent and economically poor students are offered with scholarship. some students like Manish Ranabhat, famous player, we offer such scholarship where they should not pay single penny and enjoy all facilities. In each class there are 3-4 students. There are 35-40 students who receive this scholarship each year.
Q. How do you define intelligent student?
In my view, the investment on intelligent students can return all the investment of school in course of time. He works for the entire nation in his future. At that time, even his name helps school. I don’t agree with general concept that student who stand first in class is only intelligent student.
Q. How you have been looking the situation of street children in Nepal?
The numbers of street children have been increasing each year. For them, rehabilitation centers are needed. They can come out of street if their is positive vibration in their mind. The bad intentions of urchin are all NGo and INGO take our photograph and earn money but they do help in reality.
Q. Why so many students has not foucused on study?
Every person has different skill. Some students do hard labor in study and become doctor and Engineer and other artists. The concept to think first student in class as only the best one brings frustration in many students. Therefore they are easily motivated to other things. The school has to give emphasis on their all round development figuring out their interest. Then their frustrations naturally slow down and they keep enganged. Moreover, a teacher must have well planned Lessson that can teach required skills. And, entire school system has to follow national's standard curriculum. Our government must develop well structured vision and mission for education.
Q. Do you agree that Nepali education is the mimicry of foreign education system?
I have realized this to some extent while writing school based textbooks. In school, there is influence of western academia. Similarly,as we all knows, our univeristies follow indian foot print. It has supressed our own voice interms of cultural representaion. It is a must to explore new course that meet our student's expecation. We can follow good content of global education system. However, the text must have feeling of nationality and at the same time and it has to set new course in history. The current trend is that they read the story of god and exaggeration of old generation. Moreover, only fluency of English language is not measuring rod of Students achievements.
Q. There are many private boarding schools. In such situation, what type of concept they have to develop to move ahead to fulfill the social obligation?
Firstly, every school has to do their best for the education of all. …………………………………………………
Q. Do you say anything at last?
Currently we are fighting for the right of school teachers and private schools. We have to realize that we are teaching to the doctor, engineer and writer, scholar of the future. We have to combate different challenges such as lack of discipline. Students must realize as they hav to ready to shoudler the future of nation. Let’s serve nation and language teaching and studying well.
